Free Leadership Webinar -- How To Help Boys Become Men (a leadership journey) with author Jonathan Catherman

If you're a regular reader of this IATF blog you know I'm passionate about team and leadership development, particularly when it comes to kids. One of my other passions is being a great father to my son and daughter.

While staffing a recent The Leader In Me SYMPOSIUM, I met Mr. Jonathan Catherman who is the author of the new book The Manual To Manhood. Jonathan works as a Senior Consultant with FranklinCovey and he was a keynote speaker at this event attended by 600 teachers from across the Southeast US.

Jonathan and I shared our experiences helping our sons make the transition from boy to man. We feel strongly that fathers can do so much to help a boy become a man and thus, create more conscious thoughtful leaders in the world.

How does a boy become a man?

I've been fascinated with this question for five years. I started exploring this when my son was about to celebrate his 10th birthday. I realized, like many parents, that life was moving by so quickly. It seemed my son was just born  and before too long he would be all grown up!

I called some other dads, friends who also had sons about to turn 10, and we started a father-son program that has been meeting every month. Our goal is to help our sons make the transition from boy to man in a good way.

The journey to Manhood is something that is earned. One does not become a man by simply growing older.

The world needs real men. By "real" I mean this - - the world needs men who live by higher standards.

Manhood-cover
Jonathan Catherman
says "Real men don't believe that the kind of car they drive, how much they drink, or the number of girls they get are what make them a man. Real men know that personal maturity transforms boys into men. Maturity is a practiced skill and is best demonstrated when a man knows how to do the right thing, the right way, at the right time, for the right reason. Even when nobody is looking."

This is Webinar is for you if:

  • You have a son or know someone who does.
  • You're a teacher or counselor.
  • You're interested in how to help boys make the transition to manhood.
  • You're interested in leadership development.

In this Webinar you'll get a chance to hear one of the foremost speakers on helping boys transition into men AND you'll get to ask your questions!

Free Leadership TeleSeminar -- What if Everything You Know about DISC Training is Wrong? With special guest Merrick Rosenberg

The DISC profile is one the most commonly used assessment tools in corporations around the world. And yet, while people find it interesting (if there’s one thing that people like to learn about, it’s themselves) awareness does not often translate into sustained behavioral change.

Taking_flight_bookIn this highly interactive and engaging session, Merrick Rosenberg, co-author of Taking Flight!’ and CEO of Take Flight Learning, brings the DISC styles to life. He will demonstrate how to design and deliver brain-friendly DISC training.  No more short-term results.  Merrick will help you reimagine your approach to DISC training so that it has a lasting impact.

Merrick has combined his team building background of creating and leading experiential training programs for Team Builders Plus since 1991 with his experience in teaching the DISC model to more than 20,000 people over the past 20 years. The result is a revolutionary new way to approach teaching people about the personality styles.

In this teleseminar, you will:

  • Learn why this is the perfect time to introduce or reintroduce DISC training in your organization.
  • Gain insight about how to turn classroom-based DISC training into a fun and engaging experience.
  • Discover why most DISC training is designed for short-term memory, not long-term retention and application.
  • Find out how to turn DISC training into a process not an event by reinforcing the learning throughout the year.

Attendees will learn how to re-imagine DISC training by:

  • Refocusing DISC training from awareness to results
  • Repackaging the styles to shift from empty letters to metaphoric symbols
  • Revitalizing training to involve the participants
  • Reallocating time from profiles and graphs to skills and application
  • Rebranding the message to shift from learning about letters to learning skills and applying principles

Overall, participants will learn what to look for when offering or designing DISC training to be delivered in their organization. This will allow the power of the DISC styles to be infused into their organizational culture.

This session is designed for anyone who has a personality or knows someone who does!

In Leaders Open Doors, author Bill Treasurer helps lighten the leadership load by distilling that leaders are simply creators of opportunity for others.

Please join us for this live and interactive Google Hangout (webinar) when Bill will share present the idea of open-door leadership - - that is, the responsibility that leaders have for noticing, identifying, and creating opportunities for the benefit of people, organizations, and society.

  1. the proving-ground door
  2. the thought-shifting door
  3. the door to a second chance
  4. the doors you open for others
  5. the door to personal transformation
  6. the door to your open heart

Leaders_open_doors_book

Leadership Skills Google Hangout (Webinar): Author and Performance Coach Achim Nowak shares secrets for creating profound interpersonal connections for explosive business success

Achim_nowak_IATF_hangout_2_jpg

This video interview is now archived in the IATF Members Only Area

What is the best way for you to get ahead?

Answer:  Stop Communicating and Start Connecting!

Technology has transformed the way we communicate. We send and receive more and more emails every day. We text. We tweet. We have reduced our communications down to efficient sound bites—and at the same time, many of us seem to know less and less about how to connect. Deeply, profoundly connect.

In this special IATF Google Hangout (webinar), acclaimed performance coach Achim Nowak will share his powerful 4 Levels of Connection.

1. Talk Level -- The essential skills to creating meaningful conversations

2. Power Level -- How to harness your own personal power

3. Intent Level -- How to show up alert, with purpose and full awareness of your goals

4. Energy Level -- The heart and soul level at which connections happen, personal energy makes for the depest and most lasting connections

Tested and honed through 15 years of coaching senior-level executives around the globe, Nowak’s techniques instantly transform the skills taught in traditional business communication and NLP programs.

People who connect deeply with others connect on these 4 levels: They shape conversations with effortless grace, and they play consciously with the unspoken elements of a connection—personal power, intention, and energy. The result? Infectious connections that accelerate personal success!

Infectious_book_cover
Infectious
offers simple language cues that deepen and shift the art of conversation. It breaks the idea of power into five tangible plugs that we can turn to—and turn on. These plugs recharge the quality of our connection with anyone we meet.

This book demystifies the experience of energy—the deepest of the four levels, and the root of any connection. It looks at how we access our energy. Remove energy blocks. Play with energy and own it.

Join us for the live and interactive Google Hangout (webinar) and learn how to reshape the hidden forces of connection into simple, step-by-step actions.

Boston Fans Sing National Anthem

We are stronger together.

We must rise above the fear and ignorance that produces violence.

Our work as teamwork facilitators is all about raising consciousness. It's all about bringing more love to this world.

I love this video showing fans at a Boston Bruins event singing the National Anthem a couple of days after the bombing tragedy in Boston.

"Adventures of a Geek Dad" -- my Ignite Asheville 2013 talk

I'm sharing this post on the IATF website because so many from the IATF community supported me in the following project (thank you all!)...

On February 19, 2013  I spoke at IGNITE Asheville. See my video below.

My talk was entitled "Adventures of a Geek Dad" and I won 1st place! The crazy thing is, I tried to back out of this event a couple of times. I honestly didn't think many people would be interested in what I had to say.

Although I've given many talks, this one was among the most difficult to prepare for and deliver.

The difficulty stemmed from the format:  5 minutes long and slides auto advance every 15 seconds. 5 minutes is such a short amount of time. Every word counts. You'll see in the video that I got behind / out of sync with my slides - - so easy to do.

Assembling my slides took way longer then expected because I realized I had too much to say in 5 minutes and that meant I had too many slides. I had to eliminate, pair down, refine, etc. Not easy for a guy that likes to talk a lot.

The event organizers (all great people) provided a speaking coach and she was AWESOME. Her name is Angie Flynn-McIver of Executive Repertory. Angie met with me one-on-one and listened to my talk and asked me to make a couple of simple yet important changes. One tip she gave was to "get rid of the light saber". I was going to use a light saber during my talk but Angie said it would be distracting for me and the audience. I'm so glad I followed her advice on that one.

Here are a few resources that helped a lot:

Scott Berkun -- Why And How To Give An IGNITE Talk

Scott Berkun's blog post on the same subject

IGNITE's tips for beginners

Jason Grigsby's "How To Give a Successful Ignite Presentation"

I bounced some ideas off of Ken Denmead at GeekDad.com (Thank you Ken!).

The biggest realization I had was how vulnerable I felt talking about parenting, my kids, and doing geeky stuff with my kids. The place was sold out with 420 in attendance and I just wasn't used to talking on a subject so personal in front of so many people.

Towards the end of my talk you'll see me get a little choked up when the slide of my daughter's thank you card is on the screen. That was a surprise. I practiced my talk so many times and not once did I have an emotional reaction to my daughter's card. Sharing that image with hundreds of people really did get me connected with why I do this Geek Dad stuff - - it's a great way to spend time with my kids.

Free Leadership Webinar: Practice Perfect -- Rules for developing talent with disciplined, deliberate, intelligent practice

  Katie_yezzi_2_jpg

Practice Perfect

Rules for developing talent with disciplined, deliberate, intelligent practice

We live in a competition loving culture.

We love the performance, the big win, the ticking seconds of the clock as the game comes down to the wire.

We watch games and cheer, sometimes to the point of obsession, but if we really wanted to see greatness—wanted to cheer for it, see it happen, understand what made it happen—we’d spend our time watching, obsessing on, and maybe even cheering the practices instead.

In this interactive Webinar we'll put practice on the front burner of all who seek to instill talent and achievement in others as well as in themselves.

This Webinar is about a journey to understand that practice, not games, makes champions.

Would you like to engage the dream of better, both in fields and endeavors where participants know they should practice and also in those where many do not yet recognize the transformative power of practice?

Deliberately engineered and designed practice can revolutionize our most important endeavors.

There are a clear set of rules that will make you and yoru team better regardless of the "game" you're playing.

In this live and interactive Webinar you will:

  • Discover new ways to think about practice.
  • Learn how to design successful practice.
  • Learn how to apply practice across a wide range of realms, both personal and professional
  • Learn activities to jump-start practice

Webinar Recording: "Team Turnarounds -- How To Transform Underperforming Teams" with Joe Frontiera

  Underperforming_team_1

What do the Broadway musical Spider-Man, the Indiana Colts, and Domino’s Pizza have in common?

They all used the same process to turnaround a losing team from the bottom to the top.

In the new book Team Turnarounds, Joe Frontiera and Daniel Leidl share five years of research of business, sports and government teams to explore what it takes to get a failing team back on track—especially in today’s tight times when teams are asked to do more with less.

Frontiera & Leidl spoke with CEOs, frontline managers, governors, and owners and general managers and coaches in the National Football League, Major League Baseball, and the National Basketball Association.  All of the teams across every sector consistently reversed their fortunes and did a 180 from failure to success with six common stages of development:

Team_turnarounds_book_cover

1. Lead Past Losing. Evaluate your current state of affairs, accept the reasons for failure and identify root causes of problems.

2. Commit to Growth. Communicate the vision and values of a better future.

3. Change Behaviors.  Introduce and reinforce new behaviors and best practices.

4. Embrace Adversity. Fend off obstacles to test your team and become stronger.

5. Achieve Success.  Achieve your team’s goals and decide what’s next?

6. Nurture a Culture of Excellence. Turn attention to keeping your team’s success sustainable with continual learning, innovation, and maintenance of your culture.

  JoeFrontiera

Joe Frontiera, PhD

coauthor of Team Turnarounds

In this live an interactive Webinar our guest will be Joe Frontiera, PhD who will help us explore each of these stages and he will share some entertaining first-hand accounts of turnarounds.

Team Turnarounds include:

  • legendary worst-to-first story of Bill Polian and the Indianapolis Colts
  • Jeffrey Lurie’s efforts to transform the Philadelphia Eagles
  • government turnarounds including Michigan’s current efforts to fix its ailing economy
  • business turnarounds at Domino’s Pizza, Juniper Networks, iContact
  • broadway musical SpiderMan

No matter how bad the circumstances, how awful the performance, or how far shares have plummeted, Team Turnarounds shows how any team can climb back up to the top.

Carry On

Today I'm inspired by this song by the band FUN.

This morning I attended Jubilee Asheville, my spiritual community. The message for the day revolved around the following spiritual question: What if the difficult times we encounter (individually and collectively) are the very things that point us to the fullest experience of life?

How do you, as a leader, create meaning out of adversity?

How does your team create meaning out of adversity?

IATF recognized as a top 100 leadership site

MastersinLeadership.org has just published a list of 100 Exemplary Sites for Future Leaders, and International Association of Teamwork Facilitators has been included!

The sites on the list are all great resources for people already in leadership positions, or those that are seeking a leadership role at a business.

MastersinLeadership.org strives to provide readers with useful information on leadership education and career opportunities, and this list is a further extension of that mission.

The full list of exemplary sites is available HERE.

Sending a Video Camera to "Near Space"

For the past two years I've volunteered with TEDx Asheville.  For the November 2012 event we selected the theme of "THE EDGE".  I thought the theme was the perfect opportunity to send a video camera to "the edge" of Earth's atmosphere. In the fall of 2012 I began working with a group of middle school students and their science and math teacher to design a payload to carry the video camera.

This project turned into a great community builder for the school (teachers, students, parents). Area businesses gave us a great deal of support.

It was an amazing experience.

Here's the video of the flight.

Leadership Webinar: Katie Spotz -- Leadership lessons learned while rowing solo across the ocean

Katie_spotz_1

In 2010 Katie Spotz rowed a tiny boat 3,038 miles across the Atlantic Ocean all by herself. Katie was 22 years old then and she set the new world record for such a feat!

Throughout her row, Katie wasn’t just seeking to make history. She was also raising money, for the Blue Planet Network, a San Francisco-based non-profit funding safe drinking water projects around the world. As interest grew in Katie’s amazing exploits, donations came flooding in and, at the moment, the total stands at over $150,000.

I had the pleasure of meeting Katie at the November 2012 TEDx Asheville event where she was a presenter. Katie's amazing story thrilled the audience and her inspirational message was one I thought everyone in the IATF community would benefit from.

Katie describes herself as having been the “benchwarmer” throughout her life. However, there came a time when she made a discovery:

You don’t have to be extraordinary to achieve incredible things.

In this live an interactive Webinar Katie will share her story and the leadership lessons her incredible journey provided her.

Have you been thinking about how 2012 went for you?

Have you been thinking about setting big (even scary) goals for 2013?

Join us for this live and interactive Webinar to learn how you can achieve incredible things in 2013.

Mental Models -- How does your perspective shape your reality?

This school year, like last school year, I volunteer each Friday morning at the middle school my son attends. I teach a leadership class and use the curriculum developed the Center for Creative Leadership.

This week and next I'll be teaching a lesson on "Mental Models".  Mental Models (think "paradigms") are deeply held images of thinking and acting. They are a framework we use to make sens of experiences. We create Mental Models about the world around us and about ourselves.

While preparing to teach this lesson I've been gathering videos I'll likely share with the students. These are videos that speak to the topic of Mental Models.

How do your Mental Models support you? How might they hinder you?

Virtual Team Research Project

Do you work on a Virtual Team?

IATF member and doctoral candidate Faisal Shehab is conducting a study on Emergent Leader Detection and Identification in a Virtual Team Environment.

Re: Request for Participation in a Doctoral Study to Investigate Emergent Leader Detection and Identification in a Virtual Team Environment

The rapid advancement of technology and globalization has created an opportunity for organizations to tap into a new market and customer base by expanding their operations globally. Globally distributed teams working outside the organization geographic boundaries have become more popular and have grown into an important element of the organization’s ability to achieve business objectives. The new demand for working outside geographical boundaries has created human resources (HR) risks for organizations wishing to hire the best people for the task. By using the VT option, organizations have mitigated the risk and can hire the best people, and give organizations the opportunity to bring together employees with a variety of skills to work without restrictions of time, travel, and cost limitations.

Team leadership is an important factor for improving team performance, controlling, decision-making, and providing direction. The ability of an organization to detect, identify, select, and develop emergent leaders is essential for any organization wishing to capitalize on such leadership skills to improve organizational performance and to optimize resource utilization practices. Due to the increasing complexity of the business environment, the demand for leadership has rapidly increased. Even if raw talent has no shortage, organizations can fill the leadership vacuum only if they know how to detect, identify, and develop their emergent leaders, which is not happening. Adding virtualness to the mix increases both the environmental complexity and the identification process, which makes the procedure for detecting and identifying emergent leaders more difficult. Currently there is, no research addressed how organizations detected, identified, or selected such leaders in a Virtual Team environment.

We invite your participation in a research study on Emergent Leader Detection and Identification in a Virtual Team Environment. IATF member and doctoral candidate of the University of Phoenix Faisal Shehab, BSc, MMI, PMP, is conducting a study on Emergent Leader Detection and Identification in a Virtual Team Environment. The purpose of the research project is to determine the factors that virtual team members, virtual team managers, and human resources managers consider useful to identify emergent leaders in a virtual team environment, and to explore the processes used in the identification process. The objective of the project is to identify the challenges and obstacles managers face when identifying such emergent leaders and the organizational risks that might emerge by the inability to detect and identify such emergent leaders.

Using qualitative research method, this grounded theory study seek to explore the process of emergent leader detection and identification in a virtual team environment, as well as generation of a theory to explain the processes, actions, or interactions of participants in such contexts.

Faisal is seeking volunteers to participate in the study. Once selected based on experience on virtual teams, a small number of team members will be asked to answer questions on a survey and during an interview. Participants will need to have at least 1 year of experience working in or dealing with virtual teams in their workplace. Participants will not incur any costs and may withdraw from this study at any time.

Your participation will involve providing information about yourself (contact information) and your work experience working in or with virtual teams for the purpose of identifying the participants who fit the criteria for the interview stage.  If you are selected for the interview stage, you will grant one interview lasting not more than one hour. During the interview, you will be asked to respond to open-ended questions regarding your experience working with or in a virtual team in relation to the detection and identification of emergent leaders in a virtual team environment.  Your participation will provide valuable feedback to HR management practitioners on how to create effective strategies and processes to enable organizations to take advantage of emergent leaders in a Virtual Team environment, thus enhancing overall organizational justice and performance.

All information that you provide will remain confidential and will only be used for the purpose of this research project. This study is entirely anonymous and has been approved by the University of Phoenix Review Board (IRB). Mr. Tom Heck, the President of IATF, has granted permission for IATF participation.

Participant Requirements:

If you have experience in working, leading, managing, or dealing with Virtual Teams as an HR practitioner, you might have the knowledge and insight to uncover the mystery of emergent leadership detection and identification in a Virtual Team environment. With your help we can make a difference and improve organizational justice and effectiveness by providing organizations the knowledge on how to improve their ability to detect and identify emergent leaders in a Virtual Team environment. Please join me to uncover this mystery.

==> Participants with at least 1 year of experience as VT members, VT managers, or HR practitioners dealing with VT.
==> Participants who work in the United States or Canada.

About participants demographics survey:

The purpose of this survey is to collect participants’ demographics information to determine their eligibility to participate in the second stage of the data collection process. People who provide their name and email address will be contacted to schedule 30 minutes to a maximum of one-hour interview session.

Your participation in this study is greatly appreciated, and I thank you in advance for being part of such important topic. To participate, please click on the survey link below to provide your demographics and contact information. This survey should only take 5 minutes of your time.

More than 90% of women of different social strata claim that envy and jealousy toward other women colors their lives.

90% of women in diverse jobs also report that competition in the workplace is primarily  between other women, rather than between women and men.

With women comprising over 50% of the workforce, a new dynamic has emerged. Women find themselves working with each other in large numbers on all levels of the corporate structure for the first time. While one would think this would create harmony and a supportive workplace atmosphere, it often fosters power struggles.

Mean_girls_125px
Katherine Crowley and Kathi Elster have written an enlightening new book entitled "Mean Girls At Work: How to Stay Professional When Things Get Personal".  This is a women's guide to the new frontier of professional development - - making the best of the worst situations with other women in the workplace.

Katherine and Kathi say women-to-women relationships are naturally intense. When they are good they're very good, when they're bad, they can be horrible.

The challenge for today's professional woman is to develop skills and strategies that enable her to thrive in the workplace - - even among covertly competitive colleagues.

Common "mean girls at work" behavior includes:

  • Excluding you from important emails.
  • Gossiping about anyone and everyone.
  • Making you look bad by failing to meet deadlines.
  • Needing too much personal attention.
  • Communicating in an unprofessional manner - or maybe choosing not to interact with you at all.

Learning goals for this Webinar:

In this free live Webinar Katherine and Kathi will share office-tested solutions for dealing with "Mean Girls at Work".  They will provide a 3-step plan that will empower women to support each other in succeeding at work and help them troubleshoot any stressful situation involving a female boss, colleague, employee or client.

This will be an interactive Webinar.  Our guests will be taking your questions.

What do we mean when we say making leadership happen?

How often do you discuss "leadership" with individuals or groups? For me, leadership is a frequent topic of discussion. Team and leadership development is my "lens".

One of the most important questions one can ask about leadership is:

What do we mean when we say making leadership happen?

  • articulate a clear vision
  • engage your employees
  • develop talent
  • have a global mind set
  • think strategically
  • create win-win solutions
  • leverage diversity
  • communicate effectively
  • hold people accountable
  • be an agile learner

Two problems here:

  1. The lists of leader characteristics and behaviors seem endless. It’s as if we’ve taken every positive human quality and made it into a requirement for effective leaders.
  2. Some of the advice can seem contradictory at times. Managers are told to take charge and to empower others, to be politically savvy and authentic, to be flexible and steadfast.

There is another way.

The Center for Creative Leadership offers a model of leadership development that brings sanity to the equation. Instead of putting the entire weight of leadership on individual managers and their capabilities, CCL suggests it’s important to examine how the whole system is involved in making leadership happen.

CCL's answer to "making leadership happen" involves three key areas:

1. DIRECTION: Agreement on what the collective is trying to achieve together

2. ALIGNMENT: Effective coordination and integration of the different aspects of the work so that it fits together inservice of the shared direction.

3. COMMITMENT: People who are making the success of the collective (not just their individual success) a personal priority.

CCL offers this:

These three outcomes – direction, alignment, and commitment (DAC for short) – make it possible for individuals to work together willingly and effectively to realize collective achievements. So when we say making lead- ership happen, we mean making direction, alignment, and commitment happen. In fact, we think the only way to know if leadership has happened is to look for the presence of these three outcomes.

Making_leadership_happenCCL offers a free must-read 11 page "white paper" that answers this question of "What do we mean when we say making leadership happen?"

4 Leadership Messages Your Talent Needs to Hear

My friend Joel Wright at the Center for Creative Leadership has coauthored an article published at Forbes.com entitled "4 Leadership Messages Your Talent Needs to Hear".

Worried about a leadership shortage? Gazing at a thin management pipeline? Wondering how to get the most out of the talent you have?

It’s time to expand and amplify your organization’s leadership by looking beyond your proven superstars and management-track talent.

Young professionals and experienced individual contributors need to be part of the leadership equation, too. These overlooked leaders are the people who are working on project teams, influencing others and taking on ever-larger and more complex assignments.

Consider the role of highly experienced professionals. As individual contributors, they play critical roles as engineers, designers, medical professionals, marketing or logistics experts, and so on. They are expected to take on project-management roles and be key players on cross-functional teams. As their role expands and they increasingly work with others, subject-matter expertise is no longer a guarantee of their success or effectiveness.

Meanwhile, early-career professionals are looking for ways to engage, interact and gain skills. As they navigate their work and your organization, they have many opportunities to lead, even before they step into formal management roles.

Both groups are in the right place to leverage leadership skills, but they need the nod from you. So, here are four messages that you – and your fellow leaders – can send to the skilled experts, up-and-coming professionals and, in fact, the entire organization.

1.    Think “process,” not “position.” Leadership is a process, not a title. It’s about leading with others in ways that establish direction, create alignment and build commitment. Rather than looking for someone else to be a leader, individual contributors need to ask themselves: “What am I bringing to the leadership process?” “How can I better facilitate the process of effective leadership in my group or in my project team?”

2. Understand Your Leadership Brand

3. Take Control

4. Your are Seen, Heard, and Valued

Team Batman & Robin -- Cameos from bat-climbs

The new Batman movie opens this week and I'm looking forward to seeing it.  However, I LOVE the original TV series from the 1960's.  One of my favorite parts of the show was when we would see Batman & Robin climbing the bat-rope up the side of a building and then a famous person (from that time period) would open a window to find the dynmaic duo scaling the outside of the building.

Leadership, Teamwork and the "Generation Global"

Many Boomers in management and supervisory roles have expressed the challenges of leading "Gen-Y" and "Millennials" (click here).

Some are calling the newest generation to enter the work for "Globals" and National Public Radio has an interesting report on this generation.  CLICK HERE to access the free recording.

Are you wondering how to lead this generation? Motivation wont' work.  This generation is all about INSPIRATION.  Do you know the difference between "motivation" and "inspiration"? Your success and the success of your team/organization will depend on your understanding of this distinction.  Read about the "Inspiration Economy" in my open letter at the IATF Leader As Coach Fast Track Program website.

To Bring Out The Best In Millennials, Put On Your Coaching Hat

Do you lead a team composed fully or partially with Millennials? If you're like many of the Gen-X or Gen-Y or Baby Boomers you're likely having a difficult time leading them.

From Fast Company Magazine:

In the last five years, a growing number of studies and surveys have highlighted the importance of innovation for the economic health of companies and countries. Perhaps the most significant survey related to innovation was conducted in 2011 by GE, which interviewed a thousand senior business executives in twelve countries. They found that "95% of respondents believe innovation is the main lever for a more competitive national economy and 88% of respondents believe innovation is the best way to create jobs in their country."

Companies need innovators--individuals who willing to take risks and who bring a spark of imagination and initiative to whatever they do. And millennials--because they have grown up as "digital natives" who use technologies to learn, connect, collaborate, and create on a daily basis--are a huge potential talent pool for companies. They are driven to create and to make a difference in the world more than any generation in history. However, as I discovered in researching my new book Creating Innovators, many millennials are very averse to working for large corporations--and many companies, in turn, don't know how to work with this generation.

Ellen Kumata, who is managing director and partner at Cambria Consulting, works closely with senior executives in Fortune 100 companies. She told me that big corporations are "really nervous about the Millennial Generation. They work differently--and are not as focused on individual achievement. They don't want to 'make it' and see themselves in multiple jobs. The real question is, will organizations be able to capture their strengths?"

How do the Millennials work--what motivates them--and what must companies do to attract and retain highly talented twentysomethings?

Crazy Busy, Leadership, and Teamwork

One of the challenges of being a team leader is becoming too busy ("crazy busy").

Being crazy busy is actually at epidemic proportions among team leaders.  Patrick Lencioni suggests being crazy busy is a sign of "adrenaline addiction".

Here's a great article from Tim Krieder at the New York Times entitled "The Busy Trap"

If you live in America in the 21st century you’ve probably had to listen to a lot of people tell you how busy they are. It’s become the default response when you ask anyone how they’re doing: “Busy!” “So busy.” “Crazy busy.” It is, pretty obviously, a boast disguised as a complaint. And the stock response is a kind of congratulation: “That’s a good problem to have,” or “Better than the opposite.”

How To Teach ‘Law Of Attraction’ Principles With Experiential Games - - 7 easy to lead activities that teach lessons of abundance and possibility thinking

Are you a fan of the movie “The Secret” like I am?

Did you share this movie with your friends and family like I did?

And yet…

Were you reluctant to share this powerful movie about the Law Of Attraction with your business contacts and the business teams you serve for fear of looking like one of those pie-in-the-sky Oprah-loving New Agers and maybe losing some credibility?

That was me too!

And yet I knew this information was way too important to allow my ego (fear-based self) to stop the flow.

The question became…

How do I teach the principles of Law Of Attraction (same as “The Secret”) to business groups in a way that STRENGTHENS my teamwork message?

Let’s face it, there are lots of people who don’t want to hear about The Secret or the Law Of Attraction.  To them, talking about this stuff is akin to saying Mount Everest is made of chocolate cake (i.e. they’ll be thinking you’re nuts).

But there IS a way to teach Law Of Attraction principles that creates a powerful opening for possibility and discussion.

Teach Law Of Attraction principles using experiential games.

Using easy to lead experiential learning activities you can teach Law Of Attraction principles in a way that allows the participants to EXPERIENCE the lesson, allowing you to simply facilitate the learning.

Because you’re using the activities as the learning channel, the participants are the ones sharing their experiences, their insights, and their truth.

Teaching through an experiential learning activity is very different than coming in and acting like the all-knowing expert.

Teaching experientially is powerful stuff.  It’s very heart-centered work.

And perhaps best of all, if you’re working with a business / non-spiritual group, you don’t even have to mention “Law Of Attraction”.  The lesson will still get through.

Parker_palmer_2
Our eighth guest for the Spiritual Nature of Team Building TeleSeminar series is Parker Palmer.

Parker Palmer is an author, educator, and activist who focuses on issues in education, community, leadership, spirituality and social change.

Parker is the founder and senior partner of the Center for Courage & Renewal (CCR) whose mission is to nurture personal and professional integrity and the courage to act on it. Since 1997 CCR has offered programs to help teachers, physicians, clergy and others “rejoin soul and role,” renewing their passion for their work, reclaiming its basic values and deepening their service to others.

"Good work is done with heart as well as knowledge and skill, done with a depth of commitment that brings integrity and courage to the workplace. But workplace culture can make it risky to reveal our hearts. So we hide them – and sometimes lose them. By supporting teachers, medical professionals, clergy and others who want to reclaim their hearts, we bring new life to them, their work, and the people they serve." ~ Parker Palmer

Doug Silsbee: The Spiritual Nature of Team Building [Session #6] -- IATF Leadership TeleSeminar

Doug_silsbee

Our sixth guest for the Spiritual Nature of Team Building TeleSeminar series is Doug Silsbee.

My friend Doug is a leader in the arena of professional coaching - - specifically, "presence-based leadership development". Doug's approach to leadership and teams is profoundly spiritual.

In addition to the significant contributions Doug is making in the world of one-on-one leadership coaching, Doug is a seasoned teambuilding expert having worked with clients around the world.

Doug says we are all being called to actions that lift others, that are responsible to the precarious state of our planet’s resources, and that assume meaning through our ever-widening circles of concern.

One of Doug's clients says:

"Doug's approach goes way beyond the standard platitudes to reach deeply into the areas of human consciousness and experience where things really happen, where meaningful change and growth can and does occur."

~ Harrison Owen, author, Open Space Technology.

Presence_based_coaching_bookDoug Silsbee is the author of Presence-Based Coaching: Cultivating Self-Generative Leaders Through Mind, Body and Heart which offers a practical map to the territory of working with presence, both within yourself and in your coaching and developing of others. First, we explore presence as an essential element of human learning and development. Second, the book provides extensive inner and relational coaching moves, brought to life through illustrative dialogs, for bringing presence into coaching. The result? Self-generative, authentic, and effective leaders.

GO Team! -- New Workshop Series

GO Team Workshops

18 Team Critical Topics

FREE Team Assessment Determines Your Precise Needs

Introduction

Do you have a team that needs to perform at a much higher level?

Our GO Team workshops represent a complete team-training and team building system designed to support all kinds of organizational teams - from brand new teams to those who have been together for a while. Temporary or long-term groups. Entry level or executive level. “Real teams” or just a group of people. Whenever you have a group or team that needs to work together better, our GO Team workshops deliver fast and fun team development.

Our GO Team workshops will help your team make the shift from good to great so you're not only more empowered to do your great work in the world, but you have the skills to do it more effectively.

The IATF specializes in training and developing nonprofit teams and social enterprise teams.

The Training Modules

The GO Team Workshops cover 18 team critical topics.  These topics are divided into three "levels".

LEVEL  1 -- Setup for Success     (click here to learn more about LEVEL 1)

  • Getting Grounded in Team Basics
  • Creating Team Operating Guidelines
  • Establishing Team Purpose and Goals
  • Clarifying Team Roles
  • Building on Style Differences
  • Assessing the Team

LEVEL 2 --Go Team!    (click here to learn more about LEVEL 2)

  • Enhancing Team Communication
  • Running Effective Team Meetings
  • Making Team Decisions
  • Avoiding Groupthink
  • Resolving Team Conflict
  • Solving Team Issues

LEVEL  3 -- See You At The Top    (click here to learn more about LEVEL 3)

  • Building Team Trust
  • Giving and Receiving Feedback
  • Sharing Leadership
  • Sparking Team Creativity
  • Managing Change
  • Leveraging Team Learning

Team Assessment

Lots of teams know they could work more effectively but few know exactly WHERE to start. To address this challenge we are provide a team assessment which will determine exactly where your team is strong and where it has opportunities for growth. Using the results of the assessment, we will work with you to design a workshop that produces the results you most need which means you get the greatest Return On Investment (ROI).

HOW IT WORKS -- Your team members will take a 35 question assessment that will measure their strengths and weaknesses in 17 key team areas.  The assessment is taken online and you (the team leader) are provided with a detailed report (PDF document).  You will then have the opportunity to schedule a one-on-one coaching conversation with IATF President Tom Heck where you'll map out a clear plan for your team's success.

It's common for an online team assessment along with a one-on-one coaching session to cost $1,000 to $2,500.  However, we provide this team assessment and coaching for only $295.  The assessment is FREE if you decide to work with us within six months of your assessment.

Are you ready to schedule your team assessment?  Do you have questions about the process?  Please contact us to schedule a one-on-one consultation.

Workshop Design

The GO Team workshops are presented live (face-to-face). These workshops utilize interactive learning, are dialogue-based, and driven by the members of the team. No PowerPoints.  No lectures. Immediately actionable.

Action Learning

All IATF GO Team workshops include action learning (experiential learning) components. IATF presenters are experts at incorporating action learning in workshops.  We wrote the book (and DVD and e-book) on this topic -- literally.  Trainers in 36 countries incorporate IATF action learning principles in their programs. The IATF Go Team workshops will engage your team's mind, body and spirit to produce deep and memorable learning.

Focus_ring_1

Length of Workshops

Each module (there are 18 total) takes between 2 and 4 hours to complete. Modules can be combined to create workshops of any length (half day, full day, multi-day).

Size of Workshop

A typical workshop serves an intact team of 7-12 people.  We can also custom design programs for larger groups containing multiple intact teams.

Participant Workbooks

Each participant receives a high quality, value rich, printed workshop manual (one manual per workshop/module) to take home and use as a reference. (details below)

The Workbooks

GO Team is a library of 18 team-focused topics (modules), divided into three levels:

LEVEL  1 -- Setup For Success!

LEVEL  2 -- Go Team!

LEVEL  3 -- See You At The Top!

The power of GO Team is that it allows you to build a learning agenda tailored to your team’s needs. It’s not necessary to complete the levels in sequence. You may choose topics from any of the levels, all dictated by the needs of your team.

Discovering new terms and models

GO Team workshops are built on principles of adult learning theory, so exercises are always active, dialogue-based, and connected to the team’s immediate need. Often, the module will begin with an introduction to new models and terms, and offer learners a fresh way to think about the topic.

Time to get up and move!

The “reading and writing” part of this module is now over. It’s time for learners to get out of their chairs and take some action!

Using clear, visual instructions, modules lead learners through processes for understanding their context, clarifying their thinking, identifying new behaviors, and creating consensus.

As learners explore the exercises in each module, they are learning important skills for dialogue, brainstorming, drawing out their own assumptions… and working together as a team!

Moments of reflection.

As learners work through more and more modules of GO Team, they will become adept at continually reflecting on their own behaviors, discussing them, and making change… all without defensiveness. Imagine that.

The module on trust, for example, features a “create your own assessment” exercise in which learners first identify the trust behaviors specific to this team… and then collectively assess themselves against those very same behaviors.

Moments-of-Reflection

Taking Action.

GO Team is all about making sustainable behavioral changes. Every one of the 18 modules ends with an action plan in which team members will discuss the specific actions they will take in the near and long term to ensure the concepts will take root in daily practice.

Taking-Action

Cost

Half Day Workshop (1-2 modules) = $1,800

Full Day Workshop (3-5 modules) = $2,700

Multi-Day Workshop (5-18 modules) = $2,300/day

* Workshops are intended for intact teams of 7 - 12 people.  Pricing may be different for larger groups (call for quote).  Additional $12/person for module workbook.  Travel expenses are additional.

Barry_rellaford2Our fourth guest for this TeleSeminar series is my good friend Barry Rellaford

Because he travels the world delivering life-changing team and leadership development workshops for the FranklinCovey organization,
Barry has a unique take on our topic - - The Spiritual Nature of Team Building.

When I first started to imagine this TeleSeminar series I knew I'd have to get Barry on as a guest.  When I called to invite him to be a speaker, Barry became excited and started sharing some of his beliefs and experiences around the spiritual nature of team building.  As I write the description of this call, I'm  looking at the notes I took while speaking with Barry that day and I must say, I am pumped to have Barry on as a guest. He is going to share some GREAT insights.

Barry Rellaford is a master facilitator and has delivered training events all over the world.  Barry understands, at a deep level, what it means to build teams and grow leaders as a spiritual practice.

Some of the topics we'll explore...

  • Covey's 4 Human Needs as a Spiritual Path: 1) To Live, 2) To Love, 3) To Learn, 4) To Leave a Legacy
  • Coaching as spiritual work
  • The importance of being in touch with your own spiritual nature

A globally sought-after leadership development expert, Barry has a gift for presenting complex content in an understandable, memorable, and actionable manner.

Barry led FranklinCovey's Learning Expedition Center, the company's internal corporate university focused on the development of FranklinCovey salespeople and consultants. Rabbi Shais Taub: The Spiritual Nature of Team Building [Session #3] -- IATF Leadership TeleSeminar

CLICK HERE to download the recording (mp3)

Rabbi_shais_taub_1Our third guest for the Spiritual Nature of Team Building TeleSeminar series is Rabbi Shais Taub.

Rabbi Shais Taub is a social observer, philosopher, Huffington Post blogger, and is the best selling author of God of Our Understanding.

In this call Rabbi Taub will not lobby for the acceptance of a dogmatic or religious definition of spirituality. Rather, he will speak of spirituality as a mental capacity to adopt a consistent, reality-based worldview that has specific properties universal to all people. This has little if anything to do with formal belief systems and has everything to do with a certain way of using the brain.

When one becomes "Spiritually Intelligent", how does this impact leadership style?  Can teams become "Spiritually Intelligent?

Do you have to be smart to be a skeptic?

Do you have to be dumb to believe?

Maybe you've heard of "multiple intelligences." It's the theory that there is more than one kind of being smart. For instance, logical intelligence is different than musical intelligence and spatial intelligence is different than linguistic intelligence. That's why there can be a poet who can't carry a tune and a research biologist who can't do her own taxes.

Spiritual Intelligence?

Thanks to the work of Daniel Goleman we all understand the importance of Emotional Intelligence when it comes to leadership development, but what about Spiritual Intelligence?

In our feel-good, sanitized, PC culture, the term "spirituality" has become a non-descriptive catch-all for any idea that makes me feel good. If that's the case, then it's no wonder there is no correlation between such beliefs and having a happy, productive life.

Our special guest Rabbi Shais Taub who will put forth that spirituality is a form of intelligence and can be described in demonstrable terms.

Spiritual Intelligence, Rabbi Taub says, is the ability to be discerning, and therefore, make decisions, that adhere to certain axioms or principles.
