I enjoy building and leading communities and enabling networks of people. I learned early in life that creating lasting, large-scale positive change is made easier when one leverages the energy and wisdom of an inspired community.
Malcolm Gladwell, author of the NY Times best seller The Tipping Point, identifies people with my skillset as "Connectors" - - people who "link us up with the world ... people with a special gift for bringing the world together."
Connecting, Networking, and Community Building come naturally to me. I've built and led a wide range of communities including one with thousands of members from around the world and another involving a handfull of fathers and their young sons. I've collaborated with NY Times best selling authors to advance their message and also connected and then led a group of adult athletes (locally and regionally) for a decade.
I attribute my succes to following the 5 Laws of Success outlined in the NY Times bestseller entitled The Go-Giver. What are these laws? Click the link below to learn more...
About the "Go-Giver" principles...
Most are familiar with "Go-Getters". They make things happen. They don't wait for things to go their way, they create circumstances that go their way. This approach is very "yang" or forceful in it's thought pattern. In the West, Go-Getters are often seen in a favorable light. And yet, many Go-Getters experience difficulty building and leading sustainable communities.
Contrast the Go-Getter approach with the Go-Giver approach.
Go-Getters are "me focused" and in the worst case scenarios become "Go-Takers", someone who feels entitled to take, take, take without ever adding value to the relationship or the process in any way. Go-Givers have made the shift from ME to WE.
Go-Givers are "other focused." A Go-Giver has the ability to take one's eyes off oneself in order to focus on contribution and adding value to the lives of others.
Go-Givers build teams that naturally contribute and add value. Teams built upon the Go-Giver principles will outperform all other teams. Best of all, team members on a Go-Giver team will be happier!
Communities I've built and led include:
I built the IATF in response to the 9/11 tragedy. The goal of this community is to bring together teamwork facilitators from around the world (currently 35 countries) to share strategies, tactics, and tools for building teams that are more effective AND more conscious (i.e. win-win). Currently there are 2,635 community members. In addition to leading the community, I invite top authors and speakers in monthly to share their wisdom with our members via live and interactive webinars (google plus hangouts on air). Members have access to an enormous archive of material including audio recordings, team building games, recorded webinars, e-books, and more.
Fathers And Sons Together (FAST)
In 2009 my oldest child (my son) was about to turn 10 years old and, like many parents, I wondered how that could be! It seemed like it was just yesterday when he was a toddler. I decided I wanted to create a father-son program that honored the journey he was - - growing from a young boy into a young man. I called 10 of my friends who also had 10 year old sons and we formed a group that has been meeting every single month to do father-son activities together. Some of the adventures we've been on include: canoeing, rock climbing, backpacking, sleep-overs at the YMCA, sea kayaking, board breaking, and many more. Every 6 months we take on a big community service project. Always we discuss how the activity offers lessons about how to make the journey to be a strong caring man.

While working for the YMCA of Western North Carolina in the early 1990's a new program came on the scene for high school students and it was called YMCA Earth Service Corps. The program was developed by the YMCA of Seattle, WA. I found out about it at a YMCA conference and decided to initiate a program in our YMCA. It was the first on the East Coast and nothing like it had been seen in our region. I met with science teachers in four area high schools and helped them initiate school-based programs. I provided leadership training for all the students and helped coordinate service projects all over the region. I created and managed a board of directors made up of community members and elected officals. Our group made headlines around the region and country.
In 1994 I headed up a project to start the first ever men's post collegiate lacrosse program in Western North Carolina. The program grew to include training Physical Education teachers across the region the sport so they could share it with their students - - our club provided the instruction and the "soft lacrosse" equipment. Eventually our club started youth lacrosse programs, the first in Western North Carolina. I became trained as a lacrosse official so I could help with you games. In addition, I coached middle and high school teams. I was the president of the club from 1994 to 2004.
I launched this project in January 2012. My goal with the 10-in-10 Project is to create massive positive social change by providing a free three-hour in-school leadership development program (called "Adventure Day") for 10,000 fifth graders. All of the training materials are available online at the International Association of Teamwork Facilitators website and facilitators around the world are now leading Adventure Day programs for kids. I've trained staff and students at several colleges to deliver the program and they now have long standing relationships with the elementary schools they serve. In the spring of 2013 I will begin training elementary school counselors to deliver the program.
